1/48 Monogram A-10 Thunderbolt II |
By Joe McFeely |
| This is Monogram's 1/48th scale A-10 Warthog. It was given to me by my Mother-in-law as a Christmas gift (what a sweet heart!). I opted to build it with the 23rd TFW scheme of European camo green (Desert Storm, circa 1991) and the legendary shark nose. I happen to be a big fan of the original Flying Tigers (AVG) and, lets face it, everyone loves the sharknose...right? I normal don't build modern jets, however, I couldn't pass up the Hog and its 30mm cannon providing much "Steel Rain" to unsuspecting enemies. |
The kit was built OOB save for the aftermarket decals by CAM (48-094) and I added a drinking straw drilling out the venting holes to make the "Gun" more realistic. The fit of the kit is well.....rough and required much patience (and alot of putty). I was unhappy with the ordinance and will replace it with the wonderful Hasegawa weapon set sometime in the future. Since I chose an operational fighter, I weathered it around the gun and turbine area with black pastel chalk. I opted to close the dive flaps contrary to the kit suggestion.
Also, see Chris's A-10 garbed out in the experimental "Peanut" scheme. |
